The Right Way to Replace Your Car Battery

It can be pretty frustrating when your car just won’t start, or if you have to jump start it every time you want to go anywhere. Disconnecting and Removing the Dead Battery

• Park your car, engage its parking brake, and make sure that the ignition is completely off. 
• Open the hood and locate your battery. It’s often in front of the engine and a little to the side, but your owner’s manual can help you if you don’t immediately find it. 
• Now remove the cables on your battery. Start with the negative (-) cable, and then remove the positive (+) cable. Be sure to do this in the correct order. Prevent your wrench or any piece of metal from touching both the positive and negative terminals at once. 
• There may be a bar or a compartment holding the battery in place. Remove that too. 
• Now that the battery is free, pick it up by the handle or from the bottom using both hands. DO NOT THROW IT AWAY. Car batteries are filled with toxic materials that must be properly recycled. Most auto parts stores can recycle them for you, and may even give you a discount on a new battery.

Installing the New Battery

• Check the connectors on the cables. If there is corrosion (it will look like white or greenish powder), scrub it off with a wire brush.
• Put the battery into the appropriate spot and replace the compartment or bar. Make sure the battery doesn’t move. 
• Attach the cables, being sure to follow the opposite order from before. In other words, plug in the positive (+) cable first, then plug in the negative (-) cable. Plugging them in in the wrong order could give you a nasty shock, or short circuit your car. 
• Try and turn on the engine.
